1 killed, 8 hurt when car hits Pennsylvania van

BETHEL, N.Y. (AP) — Police say one person is dead and eight others were hurt when a car collided with a van returning to a summer camp in the Poconos after a shopping trip in southern New York.

Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty tells media outlets that a red Toyota Camry crossed into the oncoming lane of Route 17B in Bethel around 8:40 Saturday evening and hit a Ford van carrying eight adults, aged 19 to 28. The car's driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's name wasn't immediately released.

Seven of the van's passengers were taken to hospitals and one refused medical aid.

The sheriff's office says the van was returning to Camp Lavi in Lakewood, Pa., after a shopping trip to Woodbury Common.
