3 Allentown police officers hurt by fleeing driver

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Three police officers have been injured while pursuing a suspect through the streets of Allentown.

Authorities said a driver being pulled over as part of a drug investigation shortly after 2 p.m. Friday fled from police, striking two police cruisers and a police officer on a bicycle.

Police said the car then went through a construction fence before the driver jumped out and ran. The suspect was apprehended after a brief chase.

The three officers were treated for injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.

At the time of the incident, the Pennsylvania Society political club was holding its 116th annual meeting nearby under a large tent. Gov. Tom Corbett was among the roughly 400 attendees.

One of the police cruisers struck a utility pole near the luncheon tent after being hit.
