NEW FREEDOM, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says southbound Interstate 83 will be closed near the Maryland border for much of the weekend while crews fix a deteriorating drainage pipe.
The pipe is undermining the pavement and prompting PennDOT to detour southbound traffic at Exit 4. Those vehicles should travel west onto Route 851, south on the Susquehanna Trail — also known as state Route 3001 into Maryland, then back to Interstate 83.
Crews closed one southbound lane of the highway Friday night to fix the problem, only to see it get worse and require all southbound lanes to be closed.
PennDOT hoped to reopen the southbound lanes by late Sunday, if not sooner.
The problem is in Shrewsbury Township, about 1.2 miles north of the Maryland border in York County.
