Trial opens for man in woman's slaying in NE Pa.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — A man charged in the shooting death of a woman in a car at a northeastern Pennsylvania apartment complex went on trial Tuesday.

Twenty-two-year-old Kenneth Evans III of Wilkes-Barre is charged in the November 2013 slaying of Shantique Goodson at the Sherman Hills complex in Wilkes-Barre.

Authorities allege that Evans ran up and fired at the victim at close range as she sat in the passenger seat of a sport utility vehicle outside the complex.

Officials said the two had some kind of dispute but have not elaborated.

Defense attorney John Pike contends that authorities lack physical evidence tying Evans to the murder.
